How Much Blue Devil Do You Use in a Toyota 22r

  1. So about 3 months ago I started noticing the sweet smell of antifreeze in my exhaust and steam during cold starts. I dont want to have my truck down for days to tear it down and start replacing gaskets right now so I done some research and found blue devil head gasket repair. It's nothing like the old days of pouring stop leak that contains metal particles, this stuff is pure liquid, it had a lot of great reviews so I gave it a shot. Followed the directions, pour in a cold radiator and let idle for 50 mins. After just a couple days the smell and steam is gone! No over heating, no antifreeze consumption. If you're looking for a fairly cheap ($40) way to fix the same issue I highly recommend this stuff. I'm skeptic to say that it is a permanent fix but it sure has worked great so far. Most auto parts store carry it and it really works

If I had a headgasket issue it would be the only "fix in a can" I'd try.

    Glad it worked for you.

Give it a while and check your coolant. You'll find some thick gel type goo in it. Good luck flushing it out too. I tried this stuff in one of my Dodges and it didn't fix the problem. My head gasket was only slightly cracked around one of the cylinders, and this did nothing. It wasn't even a big crack, like hairline small. I followed the directions to the T.

BTW, the only way they will refund you is if you take your truck to a shop and they do a teardown to verify that it didn't work. For the time and money I wasted trying to take the easy way out, I should have just jumped right into swapping the head gasket to begin with.

I got turned on to this by the local School district bus garage great way to put of this type of problem till the summer when a few days out of service is not a problem.

I did find out your engine really needs to be flushed out any antifreeze will cause all kinds of problems it states that right on the bottle .

In my use I disconnect the radiator and heater core .

It all depends just what you need sometimes head gaskets are just not practical and needs to be put off for sometime.

  6. Do it, whats the worst that can happen you waste a coupple bucks?

Sounds like a 'testimonal' version of an ad to me.

Ive never seen any elixer, including black pepper and eggs, provide more than temporary relief. And more often cause ancillary issues.

So, what happens when time comes for your next coolant flush/replacement?

I had a similar positive experience with a customer and this stuff. I do not recommend using it. Long story short, a customer had a Honda Civic with 250k miles and he was gonna junk the car but wanted to see if this stuff would work because he also heard some cousin neighbor uncle brother yadda yadda. I followed instructions to the T. Only because I was being paid to do it. It quit consuming coolant. That was a few years ago now. I typed a big long experience with it up here. I still don't recommend it. I don't recommend it because I only think this 'fix' would work on a very specific type of head gasket or head failure.

As much as I do not believe in stuff like this.... I saw a Scotty Kilmore video where he showed a method that may make it work better. It was interesting. First he isolated what cylinder was leaking. Not sure if it was by compression or wet spark plug or what. He removed the spark plug from the leaking cylinder and then poured the stuff in and let it idle without the plug in. I believe it has a better chance to work because the sealing, coagulation will fill better when it is not fighting against the compression in the cylinder.

    I don't recommend it either.
Interesting. I never have watched a vid of his but I did start a couple of em. :D lmao until I picked up on name Scotty. Now I see name Scotty and know to leave it alone.... not that he isn't a good resource for some. His thoughts shared on this are interesting. Did you see his final results? Did it work any different? Better or worse?

Why only till summer? It has been sworn by millions happy customers that "BlueDevil PERMANENTLY repairs leaks." :jerkoff:

I love when people believe in 100 000 lumen LED headlight bulb or some magic liquids with "Proprietary formula" that solve any mechanical problems PERMANENTLY. Of course, some will swear that stuff works, like 100 000 lumen bulb owner will testify that "it's so f***ing bright". But thankfully in my parent's DNA material there was a strand responsible for creating a brain, so I can think for myself.

Now I am not saying it will drive you on short run but (like for example "Slime" will plug a small tire leak) but at the end it usually does mode damage in "side effect" that it's worth it. BlueDevil Product guarantee maxes out at the cost of the bottle, and will not cover the engine swap. But still only for 60 days from purchase (here is your "permanent" fix :luvya:)

So some may try it for junk cars that are disposable but unless you want to rebuild the engine I would not recommend to put any liquid in it other then what is written in Toyota's manual.

In 50 minutes you could have already had the head off and on your way to fixing it right. Another hour or 2 and you'd have it back together. Done!

    OME and worth every penny.
Seen it work fine on a couple of beaters that were going to be junked anyway.

One Honda still going 75K miles later.

If you do your own work, nah. If having to put in the shop, give it a try. It won't clog as long as you get out ALL anti freeze and I wouldn't even put anti-freeze back in. (sub tropics here)

there is a better version for a known crack in metal.

Usually just ends up screwing over a customer of the dealership rather than the dealer itself ... .

Goes to auction. Ends up at used car dealer. Used car dealers sell crap anyway.

I gotta say it saved me a expensive towing bill or paying for the job 1500 miles from home.

I really was not wanting to pull heads pretty much along side the road.

Myself at home it gets done right even if it takes 5 years or longer like the one in progress

then I have no idea if the product is the same unless the price decreased greatly I paid close to $80.00 for the container

Completely different then this formula it did not tolerate antifreeze at all plus it was a quart

Yep, was a similar scenario with my customer that wanted to try it. Had to drain all antifreeze and had to fill just with straight distilled water and then with the bottle of liquid magic.

I'm not closed minded enough to think that this stuff absolutely would not work. There are always exceptions to the rule. I don't know everything and I also haven't seen everything and haven't heard everything. It's actually nice to hear it did what it was supposed to for someone else besides me.

I'll bet there are specific style of head gasket leaks that it can work on. My customer just happened to get lucky that it did on his Civic.

I don't recommend it but I'm not going to lie about it and say it didn't work, and I don't go around telling people to use it instead of repairing their head gasket properly. Time and place for everything :D
